Professional Development

Krista Koehl Professional Development Series

Each year the Professional Development Committees from each WIE region organize events as part of the Krista Koehl Professional Development Series that aim to enhance career, communication, and leadership skills for women at all levels of their careers in the environmental fields. These events are presented as either a panel of speakers or as workshops designed to engage, provide technical and educational opportunities, and offer tools for personal and professional development. Event speakers are typically women we admire, who we have connections to or who are professionals/experts in their field that speak at other events. Each region’s events are planned independently, with varying themes and topics, described below.

Portland

Three events are planned each year (spring, summer, and fall). Presentation topics are generally focused around that year’s theme, which in the past have included transitions in professional careers, building your profile, communication, and thriving (personally, professionally, and financially).  The 2019 theme is “partnership” with events focused on compassion, innovation, and integrity.

 Seattle

Three events are planned each year (spring, summer, and fall). Recent presentations have discussed the challenges of working in a male-dominated industry, successful interview strategies, the ethics of climate change, technical writing, strategies for effective engagement of stakeholders, and more.

 San Francisco Bay Area

Two events are typically held per year. The events highlight notable women and their stories as well as skills to help women navigate the workplace. Speakers have included Dr. Angela Meyer, Susan Leal, and Monique Moyer. Topics have ranged from the importance of creating a personal brand to increasing leadership effectiveness through mentoring.

Check the Events page for upcoming events in your region. If you have ideas for future events or have questions about an event in your area, please contact your area’s committee Chair:

Our friend Krista Koehl

The Professional Development Series was named after our friend, colleague, and former WIE board member, Krista Koehl, who died on September 6, 2013.  A founding member of WIE, Krista was a strong and gifted leader and an enthusiastic supporter of WIE’s mission, educational programs, and networking opportunities. We will be forever grateful for her support and guidance.

To honor her life and achievements, Krista’s alma mater, Lewis & Clark Law School, has set up a scholarship fund in her name. For information on how to contribute, click here
