Please join Women in Environment for the first event in the 2018 Krista Koehl Professional Development Series, an interactive and informative workshop on Mindfulness – The Science Behind Stress, the Body, and the Mind.
Does your body feel tense no matter what activity you are doing? Do you feel stressed and don’t know what the triggers are? Are you experiencing headaches and other body issues and don’t know how to control them? If you are looking to better understand your body and mind, be more bvmindful throughout your day, and understand how to have a more sustainably healthy work/life balance, don’t miss this event! WIE is pleased to pair up with two behavioral/mental health therapists from Pause Meditation to help demystify and provide insight on the concepts of mindfulness and the science behind stress on the body and mind. Pause Meditation provides “Mindful Tools for Modern Life.” Drawing from experience as teachers of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, the presenters will share their knowledge, strategies, and techniques for implementing meditation in a busy and hectic schedule. You will walk away from this event with tools to keep yourself focused, resilient and re-energized.
Information about Pause Meditation: Pause Meditation is located in Portland, OR, synthesizing teachings from a variety of wisdom traditions – primarily Zen, Insight, and Tibetan – into a simple, non-sectarian approach to meditation. Pause Meditation offers a system of mental training, teaching three primary types of mediation that help cultivate awareness and promotes greater happiness, peace, balance, and connection. Ryan James Kenny is a clinical social worker, mental health therapist and qualified MBSR instructor with over twelve years of meditation experience. He holds a masters degree of social work with a focus in mental health from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He studied neuroscience at the Center For Healthy Minds and trained with the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts medical school. Ryan has developed mindfulness curricula for public school teachers and students, and has had the privilege of teaching stress reducing meditation techniques to veterans of the Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam wars. Ryan currently works as a counselor at a local psychiatric hospital and provides guided meditation and instruction throughout Portland in a variety of secular settings for all ages and skill levels.
Rena Satre Meloy is co-founder of Pause Meditation and has been practicing meditation and mindfulness for eight years. Her studies began at the University of Redlands Meditation Room, one of the first “contemplative classroom” spaces in the country. Rena continues to deepen her knowledge and practice through her work in the Portland community and dedicates much of her time to the non-profit realm, using her degrees in graphic design and communications to support services for neighbors in need.
