Portland Professional Development Event

In-Person Event: An Evening with the Columbia Slough Watershed Council

Presented by the WIE Portland Professional Development Committee & the Columbia Slough Watershed Council

Please join us for an evening with the Columbia Slough Watershed Council, where we will learn about the Columbia Slough watershed, slough ecology, and environmental history. The presentations will be followed by a group sunset paddle on the peaceful Columbia Slough.

A few things to note for the event:

  • Make sure to bring shoes and clothes you are okay with getting a little wet. Also, the weather cools off quickly at night this time of year. Make sure to check the weather and dress appropriately.

  • Parking at Whitaker Ponds is limited. If feasible please bike, carpool, or use public transportation. Overflow parking is graciously offered by Apollo Chemical, located at 6647 NE 47th Ave.

  • The Columbia Slough Watershed Council is a non-profit organization and is hosting us at no cost. Please consider a donation to the Slough Council, if you can.

  • A box dinner will be provided during the presentations courtesy of Women in Environment.

  • Participants can bring their own SUP/kayak/canoe or reserve a seat in one of the group bimarans (limited to 25 participants in the group bimarans). Don’t know what a bimaran is? Come and find out!

Alex is a Principal at Prelude Ventures, a climate tech fund deploying $1.5B across the low-carbon economy. Prior to Prelude, Alex was a founding employee and investor at Powerhouse, an innovation firm and seed fund backing software-enabled technology for clean energy and electric mobility. Alex is a 2020 Forbes 30 Under 30 in Energy, a World Economic Forum Global Shaper, and an alum and founding member of the Clean Energy Leadership Institute (CELI) Bay Area chapter. She graduated from Boston University with a BA in Economics and a minor in Sustainable Energy. Let’s get together for an herb walk! Join WIE and Arctos School of Herbal and Botanical Studies for a fun and educational summer herb walk at Mt. Tabor Park, Portland OR. We will be meeting at 6 P.M. in the grassy area across from the Visitor’s Center at Mt. Tabor Park. From there we will stroll through the park with herbalists Missy Roh and Gradey Proctor. They will share their love and expertise in the botany of the local flora and fauna and invite us to get to know the plants here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. Come prepared for an easy stroll through the park. Some elevation change. Bring water and snacks. We will be walking rain or shine.

WIE SF Bay Area is excited to welcome back the Frontline Catalysts’ Climate Justice Leadership Program, in Part 2 of our series on empowering youth to take action on local environmental issues and make positive change.  This time, we will hear from sixth-to-eighth graders who participate in the program.  These inspiring environmental leaders will present their findings from a science project on lead-contaminated soil in Oakland’s Fruitvale district, and also discuss how they are bringing greater environmental awareness to their community at large.

This is Part 2 in a series with Frontline Catalysts’ Climate Justice Leadership Program, where youth participants will talk about their community science project on lead contamination in Oakland’s Fruitvale District. The first part of the series was in November 2021 and can be read about here.

Alyssa has an education-centric practice and takes the time to provide each client with the knowledge and resources they need to be successful. Her focus areas are retirement planning, college funding, insurance (Life, Disability, Long term care), investment planning, and professional money management. Alyssa is also Life, Disability & Long-Term Care Licensed and a Registered Representative of Advisor Group.

Alyssa is currently a resident of Seattle and invests her time in the community as an advocate for financial literacy. As part of the Women’s Resource Group, she teaches seminars for women’s groups and partners with local companies such as Amazon and Microsoft to bring practical education to their teams. In the past 8 years, the Women’s Resource Group has impacted over 10,000 lives through education.

As a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst (CDFA®), Alyssa is also uniquely equipped to help individuals before, during, and after the divorce process. She brings compassion and understanding to individuals throughout this process, offering support through strategic advice tailored to her clients’ needs.

Born and raised in Olympia, WA, Alyssa is a graduate of Seattle Pacific University. Alyssa enjoys biking around Seattle, attending theater performances, and spending time with her husband, John, and their dog, Riley. When they’re not in Seattle, John and Alyssa love to spend time traveling to wherever the sun is warmest.
